South Dakota bookkeeping: sales tax on services, one return for state and city, no income tax.
South Dakota taxes services as well as goods, runs city sales tax through the same state return, and has no income tax to withhold. Books that get those three right make every filing simple. We keep them in your own QuickBooks file, remotely, on a written fixed-fee scope.
South Dakota bookkeeping turns on sales tax: a 4.2% state rate today (the statute already carries a return to 4.5% on July 1, 2027), tax on the sale of services as well as goods, a sales-tax license for any business with a physical presence, and municipal tax administered by the Department of Revenue on the same return. South Dakota has no corporate or personal income tax, so there is no state withholding. TechBrot keeps the books and the sales-tax records in your own QuickBooks file; your tax professional files.

What a South Dakota business actually tracks.
A Sioux Falls marketing agency and a Rapid City retailer have the same first job in the books: charging and recording sales tax correctly, because South Dakota taxes the sale of services as well as goods. Each also collects its city’s municipal tax — and both taxes go on one state return.
What the books do not need is state income-tax withholding: South Dakota has none. Payroll carries federal withholding and state unemployment; the rest of the work is sales tax done right, month after month.
Five South Dakota facts your books have to reflect.
From the South Dakota Legislature’s and Department of Revenue’s own pages, read September 28, 2026.
Sales tax: 4.2%, changing in 2027
The state rate is 4.2% today; SDCL 10-45-2 already contains a version, effective July 1, 2027, that returns the rate to 4.5%. The QuickBooks rate has to change on that date.
Services are taxed
The Department of Revenue states that sales tax applies to “the sale of services” as well as goods, so service items in QuickBooks need the right tax setting.
A license for anyone with a presence
A business with a physical presence in South Dakota is required to be licensed for sales tax collection; remote sellers need a license above $100,000 in South Dakota sales.
City tax on the same return
The Department of Revenue administers municipal sales and use tax, and “Only one tax return is needed” for state and municipal tax.
No income tax
“South Dakota does not have a corporate, unitary, or personal income tax,” so payroll carries no state income-tax withholding.
