South Dakota · QuickBooks cleanup

South Dakota QuickBooks cleanup: the sales-tax setup, fixed at the source.

In South Dakota the QuickBooks errors that cost money are sales-tax errors: services set as non-taxable, city tax booked to the state line, and a contractor’s excise tax nobody accrued. We find them, correct them, and tie the liability to what was filed, in your own QuickBooks file, on a written fixed-fee scope.

§South Dakota, in one paragraph

A South Dakota QuickBooks cleanup corrects the sales-tax setup first: service items that should be taxable, municipal tax recorded against the right city, the liability reconciled to each return, and, for construction businesses, the 2% contractor’s excise tax on gross receipts from construction work. Then every account is reconciled and the file handed back with a written summary of each correction. TechBrot does not file returns.

§The South Dakota pattern

Why South Dakota files drift.

A service item marked non-taxable, as it would be in a state that does not tax services, quietly under-collects in South Dakota for months, until a filing, an audit letter or a new bookkeeper catches it.

The second drift is municipal: with state and city tax on one return, a file that lumps them together cannot produce the city breakdown the return needs — and a contractor that never set up the excise tax account has a liability the books do not show.

§South Dakota, verified

Three South Dakota rules the cleanup checks.

From the Department of Revenue’s and Legislature’s own pages, read September 28, 2026.

Sales tax on services

Sales tax applies to “the sale of services” as well as goods, at 4.2% today (4.5% from July 1, 2027 under SDCL 10-45-2).

One return, state and municipal

The Department of Revenue administers municipal sales tax; “Only one tax return is needed.”

Contractor’s excise tax

A 2% excise tax applies to gross receipts from construction work, separate from sales tax.

§What we find

What a South Dakota cleanup turns up.

Service sales never taxed

Items set to non-taxable, so tax was never charged and the liability is understated.

City tax booked to the state line

One liability account for everything, so the return’s municipal breakdown has to be rebuilt by hand.

No excise tax account

Construction receipts with no contractor’s excise tax accrued.

State withholding that should not exist

A state income-tax item set up in payroll for a state with no income tax.

§How we clean it up

Sales tax first, then everything else.

STEP 1

Map sales and locations

What you sell, which of it is taxable, and every municipality you sell in.

STEP 2

Correct the tax setup

Items, rates and agencies corrected; the liability split so the municipal breakdown comes straight out of the file.

STEP 3

Tie to the returns

The liability reconciled to each filed return, with any gap documented for your tax professional.

STEP 4

Reconcile every account

Bank, card and loan accounts reconciled for the periods in scope.

STEP 5

Hand over

A written summary of every correction and the open items, ready for monthly bookkeeping or your own team.

§Checklist

Signs a South Dakota file needs this cleanup.

  • Service revenue with no sales tax charged.
  • One sales-tax liability account for state and city tax.
  • A liability balance that does not match what was filed.
  • Construction receipts with no excise tax recorded.
  • A state withholding item in payroll.
§Pricing

What it costs, and where to go next.

QuickBooks cleanup is published at $1,200–$15,000+, fixed fee against a written scope; a sales-tax-only fix can be a focused cleanup ($1,200–$3,000). Whether past under-collection needs to be reported is a question for your tax professional; we give them the numbers.

Remote, with no South Dakota office; your tax professional files.
